    MUSEUM EXHIBITS:

    Motion Commotion
    Patricia F. Hale Hands-On Gallery
    June 18, 2005 - May, 2006
An exciting array of hands-on experiences from the Exploratorium invites you to investigate the ways we perceive (or think we perceive) motion, and to experiment with techniques for seeing patterns of motion that are ordinarily invisible. See how easy it is to fool your senses!

    Rochester's Frederick Douglass
Re-created environments, hands-on experiences, and Douglass’s own words drawn from speeches, correspondence and publications enable visitors to "walk in Douglass’s shoes" as he bravely takes his freedom, educates himself and rises above prejudice and injustice to become a commanding force in the cause of human rights. The 4200-square foot exhibition develops two main themes: how did a man born into enslavement forge a career of inspired leadership in the service of others; and why did he choose Rochester? It presents the story in two parts: the world Douglass was born into; and the world Douglass created after he took his freedom. In Douglass’s own words, "You …[shall see] how a man was made a slave…you shall see how a slave was made a man."

    Cosmic Windows
When an open-air courtyard at Irondequoit High School was converted to a new, state-of-the-art library, more than 200 vintage windows were left homeless. Instead of heading to a landfill, they were reborn as The Windows Project, a public art project by the West Irondequoit Foundation in cooperation with the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester. The Windows Project engaged 84 artists and 66 sponsors to create works of art from the discarded windows in a wide variety of media. “Cosmic Windows,” the largest single installation, comprises 11 large, six-pane windows containing 66 translucent cosmic images, many of which were taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. Created by artists Richard and Barbra Devine, “Cosmic Windows” introduces you to new worlds through old windows.

    Raceways
    A hands-on exhibit exploring
the principles of moving objects!Send golf balls looping, spinning and racing
over ramps as you experiment with momentum, friction,
    gravity, acceleration, speed and distance

    Time Capsule
In 1873, a one-foot cubed copper box was sealed beneath the cornerstone of the then new City Hall building in Rochester, NY. Filled with documents and artifacts of that era, the box was seen as a “time capsule” designed to let future generations know what life was like at that time. Fast forward to 1999. Word of the 1873 Time Capsule surfaces and, with the twentieth century and the millennium drawing to a close, the decision is made to retrieve the box from the now Old City Hall.

    At The Western Door
This exhibit examines the historical relationship between European settlers and the Seneca Haudenosaunee with more than 2,000 artifacts and six life-size tableaux. Step inside the reopened Native American log cabin that tells the story of how Seneca people created new lives for themselves in the 1830s. Meet Samuel Parker, Eliza Parker and Asa Ground and hear their stories. (Second Floor, Museum).

Face To Face: Encounters with Identity
explores the ways in which individuals and groups express their identities to the world around them. Although most of us seldom think about identity in our everyday lives, we are continually confronted with the objects and symbols that both set us apart as individuals and bring us together in groups. Personal objects and ornaments as well as clothing and hair styles express our individuality. Family crests, national insignia and religious icons give us identity as groups.

    Mastodon
You can see here an actually resin cast of a fully articulated mastodon. This cast and the skeletal remains from the Farview Mastodon are presently exhibited on the Second Floor of Bausch Hall. Rather than mounting the actual mastodon fossil, which requires drilling out parts of the bone and partially destroying part of the specimen, the museum staff chose a mounted cast while displaying the bones on a series of platforms.
