11th Annual Buddy Walk

by Sue Accapezzato

Come join us at North Ponds Park in Webster on Sunday, October 7th for the FCDSN’s 11th Annual Buddy Walk.  Myself and Co-chair Sandy Klem, along with a hardworking team of:  Ryan McNamara (Corporate sponsors), Dave Ledyard (Media), Sandra Lonski (Volunteers), Jerry Baker (Site Coordinator) and Terry Baird-Wittman (Registration) are planning another great day for all our supporters. The day is meant to celebrate and show support to all the people we know and love with Down syndrome.

The day will start with Registration at Noon.  Sponsor WBEE Radio Station will be on site from Noon - 2:00 broadcasting our event live along with pre-walk entertainment of the Cayuga Wizards, a group of adults with Down syndrome who perform magic. The walk starts at 2:00, led by the Klem family who will carry our banner and start the walk. After the one-mile walk, families will be entertained by 4 KidzPlay zones, the Grease Paint Alley Clowns doing facepainting, Live Jazz Group and a Chicken BBQ.

Registration

Registration flyers will be mailed out in early August, and also be available on the fcdsn website (www.fcdsn.com).  All registrants with Down syndrome will receive a Buddy Walk t-shirt free.  T-shirts for others can be ordered for $10 each.  Each registrant group will also receive a free Buddy Walk canvas Tote bag (15”x16”).  Additional totes will also be available for $10 each. Totes and shirts will have the Buddy Walk logo on the front and our sponsors logos on the back . Registrants will also be able to order a Chicken BBQ meal (1/2 chicken breast, roll, salt potatoes and one of two sides) for $8.00 or a kids Hotdog meal (hotdog, roll, and one side) for $4.50.  In order to ensure your shirts, totes and food, registration forms must be sent in no later than September 14th.

Fundraising

Fundraising is a big component of this day.  While this portion of the event is strictly optional (the only fees for the day is if you want extra shirts, totes or food, everything else is free for everyone), it is strongly encouraged.  This event represents our major fundraising for the year, supporting all our programs. Fundraising can happen in one of three ways this year.

1. Corporate Sponsorship  If you are a business owner, or know someone who is, consider becoming a sponsor and have your logo appear on our shirts and totes. You could also provide advertising, coupons or samples that will be put into every tote. Contact Ryan McNamara at 288-7138 or ryan.t.mcnamara@us.pwc.com if interested.

2. Official Pledge Form Use the FCDSN Buddy Walk pledge form included in the brochure (or available on the website) to solicit friends, family or co-workers and collect pledges in cash or checks and bring them to the walk.

3.  Firstgiving.com Use the web services Firstgiving.com to create an On-line Giving Page which will allow your contacts to donate to our walk using a credit card. This is a secure site used by hundreds of charities all over the country to facilitate fundraising. Instructions to creating a Giving page is easy and literally only takes a few minutes to do.  Detailed directions can be found on our website starting in mid July.  You are welcome however, to look at the two Pages I’ve already set up.  The first is a generic Page for the group (so if you don’t want to create your own site, you can email the link to this page to your contacts and they can donate through this page).  The link is:  www.firstgiving.com/fcdsn.  My son Mike’s Buddy Walk page can be found at: www.firstgiving.com/Accapezzato. This is a great utility and I am excited to use it.

Volunteers

Volunteers are still needed for the day, so if you are interested in helping please contact Sandy Lonski at 638-5234 or sandylonski@hotmail.com.
